Statement

My work initiates a dialogue between the viewer and themself – about space – emptiness – form. I am looking for the structure which transcends and which redefines the coordinates of the real space and the inner space. For me it is not a matter of formalism, it is about the touch with the transcendent and the immanent – with the spiritual that exists in excess of us, beyond us and within us. The viewers are emancipated and free to make experiences of their own: with themselves, with the emptiness and with the form.    / Wahida Azhari /

The Language of Stillness

Like a line drawn upon an empty plane brings that plane to life, so do the paintings and objects of Wahida Azhari transform the surrounding void into vital space.

The works move between radical abstraction and profound sensitivity. Form, plane, and line are weighed with utmost care. The colors are kept as pure as possible. Applied evenly in thin layers of paint, they are at once deep and radiant. It is form that imparts dynamism to the works. It is color that allows them to breathe. In this way, the works liberate themselves from their pure immanence. They open toward a transcendence that, wondrously enough, becomes perceptible precisely through their immanent qualities.

The energy of the works not only fills the wall but extends into the space in which the viewer finds themselves. Powerful and delicate, clear and open, light and ethereal, it reveals itself to them. Experience of immensity or overwhelming

As an experience of immensity or overwhelming in nature and art the elevated or sublime arouse respect, fear or adoration. As an artist Wahida Azhari renders immensity experienceable for the viewer not by means of figurative representation but by combining colour, light and spacer.   / Dr. Barbara Aust / Art Historian /

Transformations of each other

In her reductive art Wahida Azhari uses the same set of paintings to create different constellations with different tensions, in order to find a living balance, so that every form will develop to its highest activity and possibility in support of each other. These constellations can be viewed as transformations of each other in a way that would be called homomorphism in mathematics. In western civilisation the conventional traditions of thought we are inclined towards describing our world as an existing space filled with an unfathomable number of independent objects, us in the midst of it as perceiving subjects.
